Amazon has announced several rounds of large-scale layoffs this year, but unlike its drastic measures in the United States, Amazon's layoff progress in Europe seems a bit slow.
It turns out that this is because there is a strict labor protection system in Europe. In some European countries, business owners cannot even directly fire employees before communicating with "employee interest" organizations.
Therefore, this type of "communication" may cause the original layoff plan to be shelved indefinitely.
Under local law, companies must consult with relevant organizations before laying off employees, which can involve a process of data collection, consultation and appeals that can take months or even years. In France and Germany, tech giants such as Amazon and Google have sought help from these organizations in an effort to resolve layoffs as quickly as possible.
It is reported that in order to complete the layoff target as soon as possible, Amazon and Google even offered generous layoff compensation, requiring that employees resign on their own.
According to an insider, Amazon has proposed that if employees agree to voluntarily resign, they will receive a "resignation package". Some management employees with 5-8 years of work experience can receive redundancy compensation of up to one year's salary.
In Germany, Amazon has already begun laying off employees who are still on probation. In addition to choosing to be laid off, they can also choose to resign voluntarily, but it is unclear whether they will receive compensation.
According to an Amazon spokesperson: "We will adopt different layoff strategies for different employees in different countries and fully comply with local laws and regulations. Therefore, the workload required is huge and the progress is very slow."
Amazon has announced 27,000 layoffs this year . Recently, an Amazon spokesperson also said that due to the uncertainty of the economic environment, employee equity incentives will be reduced in the future.
In fact, in addition to Amazon, many American technology giants have announced layoffs this year. In January this year, Google announced a layoff of 12,000 people, and Microsoft also announced a layoff of 10,000 people in the same month.
From the different layoff strategies of giants in Europe and the United States, it can be seen that Europe’s complete employee protection system is still very friendly to European workers. This is probably the reason why European workers frequently go on strike without fear. Amazon Layoffs |
