Sales have grown for 11 consecutive years, and organic beauty has become mainstream in the UK

As the concept of sustainability becomes more popular, surveys show that British consumers prefer environmentally friendly products when shopping, from packaging to ingredients, etc. This also pushes organic beauty and health to become mainstream.

According to a report by the UK Soil Association , sales of organic beauty and health products increased by 15% in 2021 to approximately £1.38, achieving eleven consecutive years of growth in the category, nine of which saw double-digit growth. In addition, more than 50,000 products have passed the COSMOS standard certification, and sales of organic and natural cosmetics have increased by 32%.

Most of the growth was driven by online sales. Data shows that due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, about 20% of total global beauty sales in 2021 came from e-commerce.

According to a survey by the UK Soil Association , about 25% of certified organic brands sell about 33% of their products through e-commerce, 13% of brands have e-commerce sales accounting for more than 90%, and 44% of brands regard the growth of online sales as an important reason for their growth. On the other hand, 38% of brands have seen a decline in sales due to the closure of offline stores.

As people's concepts continue to deepen, such organic products have also expanded from traditional beauty and personal care categories to home care, oral care, etc., and the demand for health products such as candles, dental products and cleaning is also increasing.

What’s more, the growing demand for brand transparency as consumers pay more attention to and understand beauty ingredients has sparked interest in organic beauty and wellness products, coupled with greater media attention to environmental issues such as climate change, which are driving the organic industry into the mainstream.

The organic industry is influencing the broader beauty market, and the availability of organic beauty and wellness products is growing, a trend the Soil Association expects to continue in 2022.

In addition to the organic beauty category, with the continuous improvement of people's consumption level and increasing attention to environmental issues, various environmentally friendly products are becoming more and more popular among European and American consumers.
