According to preliminary estimates by Data Insight analysts, sales in the Russian e-commerce market will increase by more than 90% and sales will increase by nearly 45% in 2021. By the end of 2021 , Russian e-commerce sales (excluding cross-border business) are estimated to be 780 billion rubles ( about 659.1 billion yuan).

The fastest growing category is e-grocery, which had 242 million online transactions and sales of 337 billion rubles ( about 28.5 billion yuan) in 2021 .

As for other categories, such as pet products, beauty and health products, and children's products, their sales are also growing. This shows that online shopping is becoming an important part of Russians' daily lives. Moreover, Russian consumers are constantly trying to buy new categories on e-commerce platforms, and the increase in purchase frequency is also driving the development of the country's e-commerce market.

Data Insight predicts that, barring any serious macroeconomic shocks, the Russian e-commerce market will maintain its growth trend in 2022, and in some major growth areas its growth rate will not be lower than in 2021.

It should be noted that despite the promising market prospects, Russia's e-commerce market still has a lot of room for improvement. As consumers get used to online shopping, their requirements for delivery services will also increase. Developing express delivery services and ensuring fast and high-quality delivery have become the focus of the current business development of Russian e-commerce platforms.

Recently, Russian e-commerce giant Wildberries announced that it will allocate 5 billion rubles ( about 420 million yuan) to support sellers with fast delivery.

Specifically, Wildberries will reduce the commissions of sellers who ship faster than the standard time. The sooner the seller sends the goods to the Wildberries logistics center , the greater the reduction. For every hour saved, the commission will be reduced by 0.1%, with a cap of 3%. This subsidy program will cover all sales categories, including food, children's products, electronics and household appliances, health products, clothing and footwear, etc.

Wildberries said the policy plan will cut the platform's delivery time by half. At the same time, sellers can further optimize logistics costs through this plan. As more and more Russians choose to work from home, speeding up order delivery and providing high-quality logistics services have become an inevitable trend.
