Due to the epidemic lockdown, the number of parcels in Australia has surged!

Online parcel volumes in Australia are surging ahead of the holiday shopping season, with volumes expected to break records again this year.

Due to the nationwide epidemic blockade, Australia Post recorded 5.7 million households shopping online in October alone . This figure is an increase of nearly 15% over the previous year. Australian Communications Minister Paul Fletcher said that the blockade has led to an "explosive growth" in the number of parcels . In December last year , Australia Post handled 52 million parcels, and this year, this record may be broken again.

To cope with the surge in parcel volumes during Christmas and the holidays, Australia Post will take a series of measures, including extending working hours, adding new distribution centers, chartering additional planes and trucks, recruiting drivers and workers, etc.

Australia Post said it will launch after-dark delivery services and extend trading hours to cope with the busiest Christmas period ever. Among them, Melbourne and Perth will launch dusk deliveries, other cities will increase morning delivery capacity during peak periods, and weekend deliveries are being carried out across the country. It will also extend the opening hours of more than 380 post offices across the country from November 27.

In addition, Australia Post will open a new distribution center in Sydney. The new distribution center covers an area of 20,000 square meters and can handle more than 100,000 parcels a day, bringing Australia Post's total processing capacity in New South Wales to nearly 1.5 million parcels a day.

Over the past four months, Australia Post has seen online parcel deliveries in New South Wales increase 59 per cent year-on-year , with more than 4.7 million parcels being handled each week.

" NSW residents have shopped online more than any other state or territory this year , with almost 40 per cent of all online shopping in Australia taking place in the state in the last four months alone , " chief executive Paul Graham said in the statement .

According to relevant agencies' forecasts, by the end of the year , Australia's e-commerce market revenue will exceed US$31.5 billion ( A$ 43.7 billion), an increase of 29% compared to 2020 .
