The latest US peak season shopping forecast: 70% of consumers focus on product discounts

In order to understand consumption trends during this year's peak shopping season, coupon website RetailMeNot recently conducted a survey of 1,082 American adult consumers .

The survey results show that American consumers plan to spend $885.76 on the peak shopping season this year , up from $766 in 2020 and $738 in 2019.

Among them, more than half said they would buy clothing and gift cards ; about two-fifths said they would buy toys, small electronic products ( such as smartphones, smart watches, headphones , etc. ) and food and beverages ; followed by shoes ( 33% ), jewelry ( 32% ), cosmetics and skin care products ( 29% ), home decoration ( 25 ), handbags or wallets ( 23% ), large electronic products ( 26% ), and home appliances ( 17% ).

Within these popular categories, people’s purchasing intentions vary by age and gender.

For example, older people prefer to buy gift cards. According to survey data, more than 60% of older people plan to buy gift cards. In contrast, only 40% of young people plan to buy gift cards. Influenced by social platforms such as TikTok and Instagram , young people are more inclined to buy cosmetics and skin care products.

In terms of gender, women are more likely than men to buy clothes and toys , while men are more likely than women to buy shoes and large electronic products.

As for where consumers will go to shop, RetailMeNot said that 64% of consumers will go to large stores such as Walmart and Target . 56% of people also said that they will shop on online shopping platforms such as Amazon and eBay . In addition, a small number of consumers plan to shop at local retailers, health and beauty stores, home decoration stores, sporting goods stores, etc. From these data, it can be seen that consumers prefer to patronize one-stop shopping stores.

In addition, when browsing products, 71% of consumers said they would pay special attention to products with discounted prices , followed by products with high cost-effectiveness, detailed product information, and delivery and pickup options.

It’s important to note that 83% of shoppers say they will start their holiday shopping before Thanksgiving , and sellers can refer to this timeline to make their own plans.
