Online spending in the U.S. during holiday shopping season will be nearly twice as much as offline spending

The recurrence of the epidemic in the United States may lead to an increase in online spending during the holiday shopping season, and Amazon will become the preferred platform for online shopping.

According to a new survey of 1,060 U.S. consumers by online shopping service platform Dealaid , 81 % of respondents will continue to shop online during the 2021 holiday shopping season due to the resurgence of the epidemic . On average, respondents plan to spend a total of $974 during this year's holiday shopping season , an increase of 4.7% compared to 2020. Among them, online consumption will reach $670 , almost twice as much as offline consumption ( $374 ) .

These results are similar to those of a recent TreasureData survey , which showed that nearly half ( 47%) of respondents plan to shop both online and offline during the holiday season , with nearly four in ten ( 39%) choosing to shop exclusively online . This means that 86% of consumers will do their holiday shopping online , with only 14% choosing to shop exclusively in physical stores .

According to Dealaid , 94% of consumers chose Amazon as their preferred platform for online shopping . About 80% ( 79% ) of shoppers who plan to spend online plan to spend the majority of their holiday shopping budget on Amazon , with Walmart in second place at 6%.

Dealaid also asked consumers what they care about most during the holiday shopping season , with price ( 51% ) topping the list, followed by the pandemic and inventory availability ( both 45%). Other concerns included shipping time ( 41% ) and personal available funds ( 31% ) .

In addition, 14% of respondents also plan to use buy now, pay later ( BNPL ) to finance their purchases during the 2021 holiday shopping season . The most popular service provider among these respondents is Affirm ( 64% ) - not long ago, Affirm reached an agreement with Amazon to provide buy now, pay later services for Amazon consumption. Next is Klarna ( 36% ) , Afterpay ( 33% ) and PayPalPay ( 21% ) .
