Amazon's employees in the U.S. will be punished if they do not spend enough time in the company's office, according to an email sent to employees this week. Many technology companies are now resisting the practice of working from home that has become popular during the epidemic.
The email, which was also discussed on the anonymous corporate message board platform Blind, said some Amazon employees had been warned in recent days that they were "not currently meeting the company's expectation to be in the office with their colleagues at least three days a week."
The email was intended to be sent to employees who had been in the office less than three days a week for five or more of the past eight weeks, but some employees who were working normally also received the email by accident, and the company advised them to report their work situation to the human resources department.
In fact, Amazon is the last tech giant to take measures to encourage employees to return to the office. In March this year, Apple threatened to take punitive measures against employees who did not return to the office. In addition, Elon Musk also began to ask employees to return to offline work shortly after taking over as CEO of Twitter.
A study by Morning Consult shows that as of May 2022, 48% of technology employees said they were completely remote workers. Now, 85% of employees in large companies say they either work online and offline or work completely remotely.
The trend marks a major shift from Silicon Valley’s heyday, when tech giants like Google, Meta and Apple spent billions of dollars building sprawling campuses outfitted with perks like dining, laundry facilities and fitness centers to keep employees on campus as long as possible.
However, studies have shown that employees are not interested in returning to this lifestyle, with a Morning Consult report finding that three-fifths of tech company employees said they were not interested in returning to the office.
Faced with the policy of forced return to the office, Amazon employees even went on strike in June this year to protest the company's return to the office policy. Amazon strike Return to the office |
