However, just when everyone was paying attention to the latest developments on Capitol Hill, another ByteDance app, Lemon8, quietly broke out and ranked in the top 10 of the US AppStore download list, surpassing competitors such as YouTube, WhatsApp, Gmail and Facebook.

 

From the perspective of Lemon8's graphic presentation, it is very similar to Instagram, which is familiar to American users. However, from the perspective of content, Lemon8 is undoubtedly more like China's Xiaohongshu, which covers five major lifestyles, including fashion, beauty, food, fitness and travel.



Overseas, Lemon8 seems to have filled the gap in the Xiaohongshu ecosystem, and its image and text + strong recommendation attributes make users feel novel. In fact, this app is not a sudden emergence. As early as March 2020, Lemon8 was launched in Japan and Southeast Asia, and quickly took root in overseas soil.

 

However, it was not until February this year that Lemon8 quietly launched in Europe and the United States. According to Apptopia data, Lemon8 has been downloaded more than 16 million times worldwide, of which 38% came from Japan. It is estimated that Lemon8 currently has more than 4.25 million monthly active users in the United States.

 

After testing, it was found that when users register for Lemon8 for the first time, they need to fill in their birthday and user name, and then select the section they are interested in, including beauty, fashion, food, travel, health and pets.

 

Lemon8 is similar to TikTok in that it has both a “Follow” page and a “For You” page, but that’s where the similarity ends.

 

The app also allows users to post videos of up to 60 seconds, but most users seem to only repost videos from TikTok, such as fitness guru Georgia Daniels, who has more than 300,000 followers on TikTok and recently opened her own Lemon8 account.



Currently, nail art, clothing, food, and sports and fitness are the main contents of Lemon8. However, the platform is still in its early development stage, and the content will definitely be richer in the future.

 

A well-prepared seller said that by posting a link to his own independent website, he received an order within a week of registration, which was amazing. In the future, he plans to increase his investment in the platform and may even hire a Lemon8 operator if necessary .

 

Judging from the experience of Xiaohongshu in China, its ability to promote products is very strong. Many brands are increasing their marketing budgets for Xiaohongshu. Therefore, we can speculate that the future development of Lemon8, the overseas version of "Xiaohongshu", may have a lot of room for imagination.
