Amazon closes three more warehouses after peak season ends

On Tuesday, Amazon confirmed that it had started internal discussions about closing three warehouses in the UK , where it currently employs a total of 1,200 employees.

An Amazon spokesperson said that in order to optimize the current logistics network , the company may close warehouses in Hemel Hempstead, Doncaster and Gourlock to ensure that the current logistics network meets our current business needs and take the opportunity to improve the experience of employees and customers .

Although several warehouses have been closed , Amazon said it would provide new jobs to all affected employees . However, Amazon did not specify where the new jobs would be for these employees .

The spokesman said : "All employees affected by the warehouse closures will be offered the opportunity to transfer to other locations and we remain committed to providing an excellent service to our customers, employees and communities across the UK . "

It is understood that Amazon plans to open two new logistics centers in the UK in the next three years, located in Peddymore and Stockton, and add 2,500 jobs.

In addition, the Amazon spokesperson added that the closures are not included in the 18,000 layoffs announced by Amazon last week . Amazon currently has more than 70,000 employees in the UK, but due to overexpansion during the epidemic , Amazon is now racking its brains to find ways to downsize and prepare for a possible economic downturn in 2023 .

Over the past year , amid a general plunge in U.S. technology stocks , Amazon 's market value on the Nasdaq has nearly halved, plummeting by nearly 46%.

Steve Garrerick of the UK's GMB union said that Amazon's plan to close warehouses after the busy holiday shopping season was obviously a bit like "killing the donkey after it has served its purpose . "

" You can't expect cash-strapped Amazon employees to suddenly move to another logistics center a few miles away," Garelik said . " That 's not the best solution for many people." He also accused Amazon of failing to provide a stable employment model.

After the peak season is over, Amazon seems to have accelerated the pace of layoffs and warehouse closures. These operations may have a certain impact on sellers' operations. On the other hand, does this mean that the cold winter is not over yet?
