Recently, research institutions DigitalCommerce360 and BizrateInsights released the latest survey research on the U.S. home furnishings online market. 1,113 U.S. online consumers participated in the survey.
Data shows that 41 % of American consumers purchased at least 50% of their household goods online in 2021. However, this year , the proportion of household goods purchased online by American consumers has dropped significantly, to only 25%.
After the sales of household goods soared in 2020 , the demand for home decoration and furniture products began to show a downward trend this year . With the complete relaxation of epidemic control, a large number of consumers began to choose physical stores for shopping , and the demand for online home decoration and furniture products declined. In addition, the product characteristics of household goods that require trial use also affect consumers' shopping choices .
Despite this, diverse household activities also drive consumption of individual products . American consumers still have strong demand for home DIY products and all categories , and related products are generally used for home upgrades and DIY projects. Among them, home product upgrades account for 44% , and DIY projects account for 42%. 27% of respondents are looking for ways to improve their homes, and 19% even research DIY home projects through social media . Sellers can focus on layout based on consumers' demand for such products .
For many people, saving money is a top priority. 37% of respondents said they are very interested in home furnishings on sale . At the same time, cross-category home furnishing purchases are also very popular . Among them, outdoor space projects, home appliance replacement, and home office supplies are highly concerned .
Sellers should note that problems in the home furnishing supply chain have had a certain impact on consumers' shopping experience , mainly due to insufficient inventory , delayed delivery, order cancellations and logistics time . Among them, 41% of people encountered out-of-stock problems when shopping online , 25% had delayed delivery, 16% even canceled their orders, and 18% of online consumers chose same-day delivery because they were worried about order delays .
When asked about their future spending in the home furnishings category, 40% of online consumers expect to spend less on home furnishings this year . Of these, 42% expect their home furnishings spending to remain the same as last year. Only 17% expect to spend more, while 41% of consumers expect to spend less on home furnishings , which is bound to have an impact on the sales of online home furnishings products .
Competition in the U.S. online home furnishing market will be very fierce in the rest of 2022. Due to limited market demand , sellers should adjust their product layout and marketing strategies in a timely manner . US e-commerce market Home Products |
