Recently, Amazon issued another announcement to remind sellers to register for the German EPR. The announcement involves two important time points. Sellers must comply with the German EPR packaging law before June 30 and the EEE (electrical and electronic equipment) law before December 31 .

It should be noted that if sellers in Germany cannot prove that they have complied with the EPR requirements, Amazon will legally suspend their non-compliant product pages under the EPR product category.

Which sellers need to register for EPR?

It is reported that Extended Producer Responsibility ( EPR) is an environmental policy that requires producers to be responsible for the entire life cycle of the products they put on the market, from product design to the end of the product life cycle (including waste collection and disposal).

If a seller wants to sell products on Amazon Germany, Amazon will be obliged to confirm whether the products exported to Germany meet the EPR requirements. Therefore, Amazon will collect and verify the seller's EPR registration number.

If the seller exports goods to Germany that fall into categories such as packaging, electrical and electronic equipment, and batteries, EPR registration is required .

In addition to judging by product category, producers are also the party that needs to deliver goods into Germany that meet the German EPR requirements.

How can sellers determine whether they are producers? As long as the seller sells the above-mentioned goods (goods classified under the categories of packaging, electrical and electronic equipment, batteries, etc.) in Germany and has not established a company in Germany, he is a producer. It should be noted that producers are not equal to manufacturers.

Things to note when registering for EPR

It is worth noting that different EPR product categories require separate registration numbers.

In addition, if the seller uses packaging to wrap the goods or protect the goods during transportation, then he needs to register the Packaging Act EPR number.

Of course, simply providing a registration number to Amazon does not mean that all compliance procedures have been completed. Sellers also need to make regular declarations and payments to producer responsibility organizations.

Step 1: Register

Sellers need to complete a one-time registration process to obtain the EPR registration number required to demonstrate compliance with the Extended Producer Responsibility requirements .

After receiving the EPR registration number, the seller needs to inform Amazon to prove that he meets the requirements. Amazon has opened an entrance for uploading the EPR registration number.

Step 2: Declaration and Reporting

Sellers must report their sales volumes [of commodities covered by each EPR commodity category] to the appropriate Producer Responsibility Organization during the applicable reporting period .

Step 3: Payment

Sellers must pay an environmental payment to the relevant Producer Responsibility Organization. The environmental payment is determined by the Producer Responsibility Organization based on the EPR product category and type of device (e.g. refrigerator, baby clothing, chair), product attributes (e.g. packaging materials, furniture materials) and the quantity and/or weight of the goods sold.
