Woman charged with reselling stolen goods on eBay

An American woman has been charged with reselling stolen goods on eBay and laundering money.

The U.S. Department of Justice website shows that the woman was charged with one count of interstate transportation of stolen property, four counts of money laundering and two counts of engaging in monetary transactions involving property obtained from certain illegal activities.

According to the indictment, the woman operated a pawn shop and allegedly knowingly purchased stolen items from pawn shop customers and resold them on eBay for prices significantly higher than she paid the pawn shop customers. The stolen items included a variety of household items such as power tools, electronic devices, sunglasses, and beauty and personal care products.

From 2018 to 2021, the woman earned more than $2.1 million on eBay in this way. With this money, the woman bought a property in Florida.

According to relevant U.S. laws and regulations, the charges of interstate transportation of stolen property and currency transactions of property obtained from certain illegal activities are sentenced to a maximum of 10 years in prison, 3 years of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000. The money laundering charge is punishable by a minimum of 20 years in prison, 3 years of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000. The sentence is made by a federal district court judge based on the U.S. sentencing guidelines and other statutory factors.

And in January this year, a woman was sentenced to 18 months in prison for selling illegal items on eBay.

The specific situation is that the woman is responsible for purchasing Apple iPods for a school district. She makes purchases 2 to 3 times a year, and the quantity of each order ranges from 100 to 250.

From 2013 to 2018, she stole more than 3,000 iPods purchased by the school district and resold them on eBay through other people. During this period, she made more than $800,000 in illegal proceeds by selling more than $1 million worth of stolen iPods.

In addition, the woman submitted false tax returns between 2012 and 2017, failing to report a large amount of taxable income, resulting in a loss of $270,000 in U.S. taxes.
