Less than 5%, eBay's share of the US e-commerce market has declined

In the past two years, global e-commerce has developed rapidly, with more and more sellers starting to sell online and consumers increasingly shopping online. Under this trend, various e-commerce platforms have also stepped up their efforts to increase their user base in order to seize more market share. While the rising stars are rising, the older generation has also been left behind because they cannot keep up with the market development. eBay is a typical example.

eBay now accounts for less than 5% of U.S. e-commerce, down from more than 10% about a decade ago, according to Marketplace Pulse.

In 2021, eBay's total sales in the United States were $40.1 billion, up only 2.8% year-on-year, accounting for 4.6% of the $870 billion U.S. e-commerce market . While the overall e-commerce market grew by 14%, eBay's 2.8% growth did not keep up with the pace of development.

The decline is also reflected in the active number of sellers and buyers. In 2021, eBay's total number of active buyers was 147 million, a decrease of 9%, and the number of sellers also decreased by 8% to 17 million.

Under this circumstance, eBay no longer tries to expand the total number of users, but focuses on high-value buyers and narrows the focus of its layout. Moreover, eBay is also seeking business growth by focusing on several categories, such as luxury watches, handbags, collectibles, sports shoes, etc.

eBay's CEO said, "For three years, the sports shoe market has been declining at a double-digit rate. We have focused on investing in this category and creating an A+ experience. We achieved triple-digit growth a year ago and are still maintaining a double-digit growth rate." Its luxury watches and handbags categories also achieved double-digit growth in the United States.

In the field of sports shoes, eBay not only provides authentic certification, but also launches 3D real view technology, which enables sellers to display their products in a proprietary interactive 360-degree view, thereby enhancing the shopping experience of buyers. As of the end of 202, eBay's certified refurbished program has also expanded to more than 300 brands.

But eBay has also retained its user base, with old sellers on the platform accounting for the majority of sales and maintaining a certain growth rate. eBay may also adjust its categories and change its role positioning to adapt to market demand.
