Baby boomers are the fastest growing group in e-commerce

Affected by the global epidemic, e-commerce is experiencing a golden age . In addition to young people, who are the main force of e-commerce shopping, older generations such as baby boomers are also slowly getting used to online shopping. The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the development of global e-commerce and forced the older generation to adapt to online purchases.

According to Mercado Libre, baby boomers (people born between 1945 and 1966 ) have become the fastest growing group in e-commerce . At the same time, Mercado Libre also found that baby boomers prefer gardening and outdoor consumption when shopping online , and grocery categories such as supermarket products are also popular among these consumer groups .

Although baby boomers have become the fastest growing group in e-commerce , millennials still account for the majority of e-commerce consumers . It is reported that people aged 25 to 39 are prominent in purchasing laptops and accessories ; the Generation X consumer group prefers home decoration ; and people under 24 or Generation Z are more inclined to use mobile phones for online shopping .

Mercado Libre said that what makes online shopping attractive to all generations is the wide range of products available on the platform and the increasingly fast delivery times. In fact, supermarket grocery sales are also showing an upward trend, with orders for mass consumer goods increasing by 122%, while food and beverage sales increased by 27%.

E-commerce experts estimate that after four waves of Covid-19 in Mexico , the growth rate of e-commerce will not stagnate , but will continue to grow as it is now. According to eMarketer data , Mexico is currently one of the 10 countries with the fastest e-commerce sales growth in the world , with a growth rate of 20%. Mexico's National Institute of Statistics and Geography reported that although e-commerce overall fell by 8.7% due to the epidemic , it still contributed 5.8% of GDP.

At the same time, Latin America also ranks among the top regions in terms of e-commerce growth , with an increase of 20% . According to eMarketer, it is expected that by 2025, nearly 24 % of total retail sales will be achieved through online shopping .
