U.S. alpine and snowboard equipment sales accelerate as pandemic restrictions ease

Industry data shows that off-piste-related products achieved strong sales records last snow season as consumers looked for ways to have fun in off-piste activities . However, with fewer restrictions at resorts this season and increased comfort levels, Americans are " back on the mountains ," and that's showing up in sales figures, according to the NPD Group .

As shown in the figure below, sales of Nordic and Alpine touring equipment, snowboards, snowshoes and cross-country accessories declined from last season's highs, while sales of alpine and snowboard equipment accelerated, largely as resorts gradually resumed activity as pandemic restrictions were reduced .

It is understood that so far this season (August to December 2021), sales revenue of off-road accessories, including skis, beacons, probes and avalanche shovels, has dropped the most compared with last season . Data shows that sales of these products have dropped 14% this season, compared with a 90% increase at this time last year.

Meanwhile, Nordic and alpine touring equipment and snowshoes also experienced dramatic sales growth last season , even doubling the size of the category in some cases. However, sales have softened this season from last season’s highs , with split skis ( also a cross-country product) down 17 % after triple-digit growth last season .

Sales growth for alpine and snowboard equipment, which was more sluggish than other categories last season, accelerated this season, with revenues up 16% and 29%, respectively, compared with just 3% growth in each category last season , the data showed.

It is understood that in snowboard equipment, traditional bindings and boots still bring in the majority of sales , but it is worth noting that step-in technology -related products have also seen significant growth. Sales growth of step-in ski boots and bindings has exceeded that of all other snowboard product categories.

It can be seen that sellers of alpine and snowboard equipment will have considerable sales and profits this season, but since they are seasonal products, inventory planning must be done in advance.
