Resale boom in France, with over 3 million related ads on eBay

According to foreign media reports, after Christmas, France ushered in a wave of Christmas gift resale. This year, thousands of Christmas gifts were not favored by the recipients, and these gifts were put on the website for secondary resale as soon as they were unpacked.

According to data released by Rakuten's website LCI, as of 3 p.m. on December 25, more than 600,000 advertisements had been placed on the resale platform, an increase of 15% from 2020 .

At the same time, there has been a surge in ads for resale items on the e-commerce platform eBay. According to RTL, eBay added 300,000 resale ads on December 25. Nathalie Blitz Vueya, eBay's legal director, explained on BFMTV that the platform expects to receive 1 million to 1.5 million ads between December 25 and 28. By January 3 , the number of resale ads received on the eBay platform is expected to exceed 3 million .

According to statistics, 4 out of 10 French people have already resold their Christmas gifts . The best-selling products on these specialized websites include Lego , Harry Potter series and Star Wars, Skyjo or Codenames board games, FIFA 2022 video games, and books and comics after Stephen King , Asterix and Griffin .

Nathalie Blitz Vueya, eBay's legal director, pointed out: " This series of phenomena proves a trend that started a few years ago : the second-hand market is growing . Today, one in two French people considers second-hand gifts when giving gifts to friends . " In fact, a survey released by eBay at the end of November showed that 53 % of respondents planned to give second-hand gifts at Christmas, and among young people aged 16 to 24, this proportion was as high as 64%.

According to another survey by Rakuten, more than 40% of French people have resold gifts that were not suitable for them. Among the reasons given by these people, one-third (32%) said that they did not need it , 23% said that they already had similar gifts , and 16% thought that the gift was not suitable for them.

In short, as consumers' environmental awareness increases, reselling products they no longer need has become an inevitable trend at present.
