The rapid development of the Southeast Asian market in recent years has attracted the attention of many cross-border sellers. According to the latest report statistics, more than 40 million people in Southeast Asia will become Internet users in 2020, and the number of Internet users in Southeast Asia has exceeded 440 million. And 90% of users said they will continue to shop through online channels.
With its demographic advantage, Southeast Asia's e-commerce market is developing rapidly. Experts predict that by 2025, Southeast Asia's e-commerce is likely to surpass the UK and become one of the world's top three markets in terms of revenue.
Among them, the development of Thailand and Vietnam markets in Southeast Asia is the most noteworthy.
Thai consumers were already accustomed to online shopping before the pandemic. According to statistics, there are currently 36.6 million online shoppers in Thailand , spending about US$243.17 per year. It is expected that by 2025, the number of online shoppers will reach 43 million.
According to age, 76% of people aged 15-19 use the Internet, and they are also the "main force" of online shopping; 52% of people aged 20-29 use the Internet. This shows that the Internet penetration rate is relatively high among the younger generation, which has made a lot of "contributions" to the development of Thailand's e-commerce market.
Electronics and media account for the largest share of Thai e-commerce revenue, with a market share of approximately US$2.6 billion, followed by toys, DIY products, etc., with a market share of approximately US$1.51 billion.
In addition, the development of Vietnam’s e-commerce market is also a “booster” for the development of the overall Southeast Asian market .
In Vietnam, there are about 53 million digital consumers by the end of 2021. Compared with 2020, the purchase volume of online stores in Vietnam this year has increased by 40% year-on-year, and the number of commodity categories purchased by online shoppers has increased by 50%. The more types of goods consumers can buy, the more they want to consume.
According to forecasts, Vietnam's e-commerce revenue is expected to reach US$21 billion this year and US$39 billion by 2025.
In the Southeast Asian market, Shopee , Lazada , and Tokopedia are the most popular e-commerce platforms among local people. In addition, in countries like Thailand and Vietnam, the e-commerce scale is moderate, the competition is relatively small, and the policies are friendly to cross-border e-commerce and foreign investment. They are all easy-to-enter and pilot e-commerce sites. Therefore, the Southeast Asian market has also become a place for many sellers to "test the waters", which has also made the local e-commerce industry more active. Southeast Asia Thailand Vietnam |
