Australia Post said November 2021 was "the biggest month in Australian online shopping history", with a record 21 million parcels delivered during the November sales event.
According to Australia Post, online shopping records for November as a whole were 13% higher than the same period last year and 76% higher than in 2019.
Ben Franzi, general manager of parcel and express services at Australia Post , said the biggest reason for the surge in parcel volume was that sales started earlier this year , with many online merchants starting promotions earlier than last year and people having more time to snap up goods than the traditional Black Friday.
Therefore, the promotion starts early and lasts longer, giving consumers more time to consider and place orders. Many merchants said that the discounted products were sold out before Black Friday.
Over the weekend, which included Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Australia Post said it delivered about 800,000 parcels, with 444 tonnes of parcels shipped via 21 dedicated aircraft, a 15 per cent increase on last year.
Almost a quarter of all parcels came from the fashion and apparel retail sector. Pet supplies and tools, garden supplies, footwear and fashion accessories were also in high demand.
Pet products had the highest year-on-year growth rate among all categories, up 21.8%; garden tools and supplies grew 21.1% year-on-year ; footwear sales grew 17.8% year-on-year; fashion accessories and beauty grew 12.4% and 10.9% year-on-year respectively.
Previously, in response to the November shopping season, Australia Post launched a dusk delivery service and extended trading hours. From November 23 to December 23, the trading hours of more than 380 postal outlets across the country were extended. A dusk delivery service was added in Melbourne and Perth, and it is expected that an additional 25,000 parcels can be delivered every day.
The executive general manager of Australia Post said that in order to ensure that the parcels purchased online by consumers can be delivered on time during the holiday season, Australia Post has recruited nearly 300 drivers to ensure sufficient delivery staff. Many post office sites have also extended their business hours to provide customers with better and more flexible services before the holiday season.
The executive general manager of Australia Post also mentioned that the epidemic lockdown policies across Australia this year have led Australians to shop more online. In October alone, about 5.7 million households shopped online, an increase of nearly 15% over last year. Therefore, it is expected that the number of online shopping in Australia will increase to a certain extent before Christmas.
Australia Post reminds merchants and consumers that in order to ensure that parcels can be delivered smoothly before the holidays, they are advised to pay attention to the time of purchase and discount promotions to avoid affecting the speed of express collection and delivery. Australia pack |
