20 million audiences, second-hand goods are popular in the United States

It is the peak sales season, and coupled with the impact of the epidemic, this year's supply chain is extremely tight, and many categories of products are facing the pressure of out-of-stock. Under this circumstance, many consumers have turned their attention to second-hand products to solve this urgent problem.

One respondent who just moved said, "We just moved here and the dresser we bought will take six months to arrive. I can't wait that long, but if I buy it second-hand, I can get it tomorrow."

Jean, a seller of second-hand wallets on eBay, said the tight supply chain has both advantages and disadvantages for his second-hand business. On the one hand, inventory on the supply side is harder to obtain, and on the other hand, he is able to sell more bags at higher prices, even if they are damaged or stained.

He also said that before this year, most customers would try to bargain , but now everyone just wants to know how fast he can ship. "Because I have those products and retailers don't, my sales have really increased, and I may do $1 million in sales this year . "

Two sellers from companies that rent or sell furniture through a circular business model believe that the growing popularity of the secondhand economy is actually about changing consumer attitudes toward secondhand products. “This consumer behavior is not just because of the supply chain, the supply chain just accelerates the change in people’s perception of secondhand.”

In addition to buying second-hand items for their own use, many consumers also buy them as gifts, and there are more inquiries about gift-giving than ever before. In a recent Mercari survey, three-quarters of American adults surveyed said they expect to buy at least one second-hand item this holiday season.

“Our research shows that 20 million people in the U.S. use secondhand shopping as a way to avoid supply chain issues, and we estimate they contribute $7 billion in resale revenue , Mercari CEO Steve Schmidt said in a press release.

Second-hand goods have always had a certain market, and this supply chain crisis has promoted its development. With the deepening of the concept of sustainability, there will be greater room for development in the future.
