54% of Gen Z say they will shop exclusively online in the future

More than half of Generation Z shoppers now believe they will shop entirely online within the next decade as the high street continues to lose its appeal to younger shoppers .

According to WP   A new study commissioned by Engine and conducted by the Center for Generational Dynamics found that 54% of Generation Z ( those born between 1996 and 2010 ) and 39% of Baby Boomers believe that all shopping will be done online by 2031.

Another 75% of Gen Z shoppers said they plan to shop all or most of the next year , as the vast majority plan to continue their lockdown -era shopping habits post -pandemic .

More than two-thirds of Baby Boomers (70%) and Millennials (67%) said they expect to maintain their new shopping habits post- pandemic , compared with 63% of Gen X and Gen Z.

"There is a lack of accurate statistics on how to understand and serve consumers, customers, and markets . These data reveal how generations have changed and adjusted their online behaviors over the past year ( including throughout the pandemic ) , and the trends that will impact the next 3-5 years . " Jason, president of the Center for Generational Dynamics   Dorsey said.

Younger generations are now more dependent on the internet, making it increasingly important for brands to establish themselves online.

According to the survey, Generation Z is still the most internet-dependent generation , with nearly 30% of Generation Z respondents saying they cannot comfortably spend an hour without the internet, and 67% unable to be away from the internet for more than four hours.

Not only do they expect to have constant access to the Internet , but they also expect that within five years everything —clocks, refrigerators, vacuum cleaners, dishwashers, and other appliances—will be connected to the Internet .

Research points out that Generation Z now has a total spending power of $143 billion, which is the key to retailers ' success. Mary Ellen Dugan, chief marketing officer of WPEngine, said: "Generation Z is on the road to becoming the largest generation of consumers. This will have a profound impact on marketers and brands. To effectively attract Generation Z, they must embrace new technologies and try new forms of communication."
