U.S. home goods online sales grew 51.8% in 2020

In 2020, the outbreak of the new coronavirus changed the norm for consumers and the retail industry, and many online home furnishings retailers experienced unprecedented development under the influence of the epidemic .

As consumers are forced to stay at home, they have more time to decorate their living spaces to make them more interesting and functional to meet their work , study and entertainment needs .

Many offline stores have closed to reduce or avoid close contact between shoppers and the spread of the virus . This has been a boon for home furnishings retailers, especially online ones.

According to statistics , online home furnishings sales in the United States increased by 51.8% year - on -year in 2020. However, due to the 8.8% decrease in offline home furnishings sales , the growth of total home furnishings sales in 2020 fell back to 6.1 %.

In addition, among the top 1,000 listed by foreign media , 104 home furnishing retailers saw online sales increase by 49.0% year-on-year, slightly lower than the growth of all online home furnishing sales in the U.S. This shows that consumers are also buying home furnishings from retailers, department stores or mass merchants outside the list .

Many home furnishing companies have developed during the epidemic

Lovesac Home Furnishing Company ranked 401st among the top 1,000 listed by foreign media. It temporarily closed its retail showrooms during the epidemic in March and April 2020 , switched to an online sales model, and focused on omni-channel services . Its sales increased beyond expectations.

In addition to these brands, many mass merchants have also benefited from the surge in e-commerce driven by the epidemic . It is reported that online home furnishings sales of all mass merchants account for 39.4% of the entire US online home furnishings market , up from 38.4% in 2019. These merchants' online home furnishings sales in 2020 collectively increased by 55.8%.

Amazon stands out as the top seller of home goods among all mass merchants . The pure-play online retailer’s online home goods sales account for 25.7% of the total U.S. online home goods market .

It is understood that Amazon launched its home furnishing brands Rivet and Stone & Beam in October 2017. Consumers who purchase Rivet and Stone & Beam series products can enjoy Prime free shipping service, and orders can be delivered within two days at the fastest.

Today, Amazon's investment in home furnishings has also paid off . According to foreign media statistics, among the top 1,000 home furnishings retailers in 2020 , Amazon sold the most home furnishings online.

After this epidemic, I believe people will have a new understanding of home furnishing. Due to the repeated epidemics, people may spend more time working from home in the future. Accordingly, home furnishing products may still be a product selection direction worthy of consideration for sellers.
