More than 1,300 fraudulent accounts registered with MercadoLibre Venezuela were suspended in the first half of this year .
The company said it has been working hard to eliminate fraud and criminal activities on its platform. "In the first half of the year, more than 1,300 accounts with fraudulent activities were terminated, bringing the number of safe transactions on the page to 99.9%."
The company has a customer service center team of more than 60 people who have been helping users since March 2019, working to provide a better experience for all users. The team's main focus is "focusing on control policies and good practices, paying attention to accounts, reducing evasion, and mitigating user misconduct." They also encourage users to report issues they encounter and inappropriate behavior of other users in order to build a safer community.
The customer service center has two main strategies to reduce the risk of fraud. Initially, they implemented a large-scale account review strategy . It consists of a series of automated filters to detect publications and sellers that do not comply with the terms and conditions of the e-commerce platform.
“Some of the most common violations include inaccurate product pricing, prohibited items, disclosure of personal information, and fraudulent activity,” MercadoLibre said in its announcement. The filters “determine if a seller is violating these rules by monitoring the seller’s responses to buyers, the types of products offered and prices, and buyer reviews.”
Once an account violation is discovered, MercadoLibre will immediately suspend the account and conduct an audit. If the seller corrects the offending attributes, MercadoLibre will restore the account. If fraudulent behavior is detected, the account will be permanently disabled.
In the first half of 2021, MercadoLibre reconsidered this strategy after hearing and addressing complaints from some affected users . As a result, it switched to a manual review program to reduce the margin of error, reducing the number of accounts that were wrongly suspended from more than 25% to less than 5%.
Since Amazon's large-scale account suspension in the first half of the year, more and more platforms have gradually tightened their policies. Not long ago, Wish also updated its merchant policy to crack down on merchants using fraudulent and misleading information. Here, sellers are reminded to pay attention to and understand the latest policies of the platform in a timely manner to prevent losses caused by violations.
