Amazon and other global websites crashed due to server outages

Amazon and other global websites crashed

At around 5:49 a.m. U.S. time , a server outage at Fastly, a U.S. cloud computing service provider, rendered multiple websites around the world inaccessible, including shopping sites Amazon, eBay and Target; British government websites; leading media outlets The New York Times, The Guardian and The Financial Times; online discussion platform Reddit and French newspaper Le Monde, among other applications, all displayed "Error 503 Service Unavailable", as if the sites were shut down.

The outage had a huge impact, affecting dozens of countries in America, Europe, Asia, and South Africa, which made many people lament that this problem is global and caused enterprises to worry about the security of cloud computing. Some netizens also said: Looking around, who is being sanctioned?

The incident gradually fermented and quickly became a trending search on Twitter , but while millions of users complained on Twitter that the Internet was broken, Twitter itself was also faltering, unable to share photos or emojis. Yes, after Twitch and Reddit went down, Twitter also went down.

The main cause of the problem was CDN , which exists to load pages quickly and does some clever technical work behind the scenes to keep many of the Internet's largest sites running, but this time it went wrong. Industry insiders said that if the outage came from a malicious hacker group, this situation could last for weeks.

The outage was fixed and the global network was back online

Fortunately, the affected websites were restored one after another after the server problems occurred one hour ago. Fastly also stated that it has observed the incident and solved the problem, and its global network is back online. However, due to the residual impact of the problem, some customers may experience longer loading times.

After Fastly released the news, websites that monitor network conditions also showed that websites such as Amazon, Reddit and Spotify have not yet returned to normal, which means that the outage problem has not been completely resolved.

As one of the world's most widely used cloud-based content delivery network providers, Fastly went public in 2019 with a market value of over $5 billion. The company aims to speed up the loading times of websites and help them handle problems such as sudden traffic.

But it’s not the first time the company has had such problems, having previously temporarily shut down parts of larger online platforms including Google and Amazon.

In fact, outages of major websites and applications occur from time to time, but they usually do not last long. In the words of the industry, there is no error-free Internet, you just need to look at how quickly it recovers from the outage.
