Recently, a new policy targeting American technology companies by the European Parliament is about to be implemented , and sellers may become the biggest victims.
It is reported that the policy forces Amazon to share all seller data collected by its European branch with the EU , otherwise Amazon will face sanctions and will need to switch to local cloud service providers.
If the policy is implemented, all information about sellers on Amazon Europe will be exposed to relevant European agencies , including turnover, order volume, shipping inventory , etc. Sellers will have nothing to hide and will only be exposed to scrutiny.
At the same time, this also reflects that after the policy is implemented, the compliance level of European sellers must reach a certain level , otherwise European institutions will quickly extract seller data for punishment. Therefore, in addition to uploading tax numbers as required, the compliance of tax reporting links and processes is also indispensable .
The new policy stems from a data security investigation that the European Union began last month. The investigation found that American technology giants, led by Amazon, would share all user data collected in Europe with US authorities, including company information, usage records and service content of consumers, sellers and advertisers.
While the United States is sharing all Amazon European seller data, EU institutions have not been able to get some of the key data. This is indeed a very serious problem for the EU, which means that most of Europe's e-commerce economy will be under the surveillance of the United States.
Therefore, the EU is actively promoting the new policy, on the one hand to protect the EU’s economic security, and on the other hand it is also another round of sanctions against the technology giant Amazon.
In fact, as early as July last year, the European Commission had launched an investigation into Amazon. After more than a year of investigation, the EU agency determined that Amazon had violated EU antitrust rules and used seller data to profit from its own business.
According to CNN , the EU is likely to make a final ruling next year and may fine Amazon up to $37 billion.
In addition, the European Commission also announced that it will launch a second round of antitrust investigations into Amazon's Buy Box and Prime membership functions.
