According to data from the tameboy website, Australians have seen a significant increase in shopping on eBay since the pandemic lockdown. Data shows that Australia's online retail sales increased 54% year-on-year in February. Currently, there are about 14 million online shoppers in Australia, and eBay provides services for two-thirds of them.
Among all customer groups, young consumers account for the largest proportion. More than half (57%) of the Generation Z (18 to 24 years old) consumer group choose to shop online, and the baby boomer generation (over 60 years old) has also begun to turn to online shopping at an alarming rate, with the number increasing by 69%.
Tim MacKinnon, managing director of eBay Australia, said that eBay has added 1 million shoppers and the platform has 12 million unique visitors per month. During the epidemic, more and more Australians have realized the benefits of online shopping. 58% of respondents said that online shopping makes them feel safe, and 81% of respondents said they would compare prices in different stores. In addition, Australian local companies have also shown vitality with the development of online platforms.
In March, eBay released its Lockdown : One Year On report , which showed Australians' shopping trends since the outbreak of the epidemic.
Safety first, sales of epidemic prevention products surge

New value of idle items, the second-hand market is booming
The epidemic has caused many people to start replanning their consumption plans. Platform data shows that more than one-fifth of people have started selling unused items on online platforms, and more than half of people use second-hand trading activities as their side job, earning an average of US$42,922 by selling personal items.
As time spent at home increases, games and online office work become popular
In 2020, TV series such as Lego Masters were popular in Australia, which affected consumer demand. According to eBay data, after the TV series was broadcast, an average of three sets of Lego bricks were sold on the platform every minute. Similarly, the TV series The Last Dance also attracted attention to basketball-related products, and Chicago Bulls jersey sales increased by 283% in May.
As online work becomes the norm, consumers are beginning to increase their searches and spending on such products. Three-quarters of people working from home said they have more time to browse online shopping websites while working from home. Data shows that men are more likely than women to shop online while working from home ( 56% and 44% respectively).
With the arrival of the COVID-19 vaccine, 83% of Australians said they would continue to shop online as before. eBay Australia is set to see even higher levels of growth in the new year. eBay Platform Australia |
