During the epidemic, GoMart’s users increased by 8 times and sales soared by 1900%!

After the outbreak, Indonesian consumers avoided markets and shopping malls as much as possible due to concerns about contracting COVID-19 while shopping , and regularly purchased household necessities and groceries through various applications and e-commerce platforms . Many companies and retailers took this opportunity to innovate and launch more services based on consumer demand.


In April 2020, McKinsey conducted a survey of 711 people titled "The Impact of the Epidemic on Retail and Consumer Goods in Indonesia". The report showed that the public 's trend of shopping in physical stores is declining , with 36% of respondents saying they will use more apps to buy daily necessities. As many as 40% of respondents said they will reduce the frequency of going to physical stores for shopping .


In addition, a survey conducted by McKinsey in November 2020 showed that nine out of ten Indonesians have tried new ways of shopping . Relevant data showed that during the epidemic , 36% of Indonesians used delivery services to buy daily necessities . As many as 65% said that they would continue to use these services even after the epidemic is over.


Gojek's grocery service GoMart noted that transaction growth rose sharply during the pandemic , with merchandise sales increasing 19 times from February to December 2020 , while the number of GoMart monthly users increased eightfold.


“Because of the pandemic , people’s behavior has changed. People are turning to online activities to reduce the risk of contracting the coronavirus . This is also affecting the trend of buying necessities online , said the head of the grocery business .


Currently, GoMart provides services in 11 major cities including Jakarta , Medan , Makassar and Palembang . At the same time, GoMart also plans to expand its business scope in 2021 and continue to innovate, and will increase the selection of stores and products according to public demand.


Gojek's head of product marketing Yoel Wijaya said the company also plans to improve the quality of its Emak Jago service , which helps customers choose fresh ingredients.


Simon Wintels, partner in McKinsey 's Southeast Asia packaged consumer goods and retail practice, said consumers often have many concerns when shopping , including product value and product freshness .
