The average online shopping expenditure per capita is US$304, and Türkiye's e-commerce market has great potential

The report shows that the average online shopping expenditure per capita in Turkey was US$158 in 2019, which increased by 92% to US$304 in 2020, boosted by the epidemic. Although the average online shopping expenditure per capita has increased, the figure is less than half of the world average (US$703).

In the ranking of per capita online shopping expenses of various countries last year, South Korea, Switzerland and the United Kingdom ranked the top three in the world , reaching US$2,012, US$1,863 and US$1,697 respectively. Turkey ranked 29th, down one place from 2019.

In addition, there are 18 countries around the world where per capita online shopping expenses exceed US$1,000 , eight more than in 2019.

According to the report, although Turkey's per capita online shopping expenditure lags far behind the world average, the number of online shoppers has increased.

Data shows that Turkey ranked 38th in the world in terms of the proportion of e-commerce users in 2019, and climbed 15 places to 23rd in 2020. Last year, 75 out of every 100 Turks aged 16 to 64 shopped online. In 2019, the number was 63. The report emphasizes that the proportion of e-commerce users in Turkey has risen by 12 percentage points last year and is very close to the world average.

According to a report by the Turkish Industrialists Association, Turkey's e-commerce has grown by an average of 30% to 40% per year. Gele Kayral, co-founder of Avantajix, said that Turkey's e-commerce market continued to grow this year, but it has fallen below the world average.

According to Statista data, the size of Turkey's e-commerce market is expected to reach US$14.89 billion in 2021 and grow at a rate of 14.59%. By 2025, its e-commerce scale will reach US$25.673 billion.

Kayral also said that the epidemic has caused other industries and products to turn to e-commerce. One of the reasons why people prefer online shopping, whether in Turkey or other countries, is that they can shop at preferential prices. In addition, online shopping also provides them with freedom and convenience. People can order products from the Internet at any time and place.
