In 2020, the UK's online spending reached 176.6 billion pounds, ranking third in the world!

It is reported that data released by Merchant Machine showed that British shoppers' online shopping spending reached 176.6 billion pounds in 2020, ranking third in the world after China and the United States .

Although the UK lags behind China and the US in terms of total spending, its per capita online consumer spending is $4,516, far higher than the US 's $3,680 and China 's $2,386 , ranking among the top in the world.

China, the United States, and the United Kingdom lead the development of the online economy in Asia, America, and Europe respectively, and are all the leading countries in the world in terms of e-commerce development. From the relevant data released by Merchant Machine , we can find out what the differences are in terms of online spending between the United Kingdom, China, and the United States.

The data , which analyses consumption habits of different countries, said China is the country with the most online consumption in the world , with business-to-consumer ( B2C ) spending of $1,276.2 billion , but per capita online consumer spending is only $2,386.

Although China's online consumer spending last year fell 8.6% from 2019 to about 23.8 trillion yuan (US$3.5 trillion), China, as the second largest economy , is still the country with the largest online spending in the world.

In comparison, the average online consumer spending in the United States is higher than that in China , at about US$3,680, but its total spending in B2C transactions is US$830.7 billion, 34.91% lower than that in China.

On the other hand, the average online spending in the UK is $4,516, 89.27% more than in China, but the total B2C spending in the UK is about 1/6 of that in China . This huge difference has a lot to do with the UK’s population, Internet penetration, and the degree of e-commerce development.

The total population of the United Kingdom is about 66 million , and it is a country with a very high Internet penetration rate in Europe. Its e-commerce penetration rate is as high as 84%, which means that about 84% of British people have made an online purchase in the past year.

Although the Internet penetration rate in the United States is as high as 74.4%, it is still significantly lower than that of many European countries; China ranks 87th in the world in this indicator, and its Internet penetration rate is obviously lower. In terms of e-commerce penetration rate, the United States ranks 12th in the world and China ranks 33rd, far lower than the United Kingdom.

So, the UK can still achieve a high per capita level even though its total online consumer spending is lower.
