German grocery discounter ALDI , which owns Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd, is to merge its e-commerce activities in Germany and start selling groceries online.
According to Germany's Food News, the two companies in the north and south have jointly established Aldi E-Commerce Co., Ltd. in Düsseldorf, Germany, and are committed to developing cross-regional joint online stores.
Previously, Aldi in the North had experience in e-commerce operations. It had established partnerships with two grocery delivery companies, Deliveroo in the UK and Instacart in the United States. This laid a good foundation for the development of Aldi's e-commerce and did not require too much investment in the future.
Aldi's service targets are mainly low- and middle-income working class people, residents without fixed income and retired elderly people. Most of its chain outlets are located in downtown residential areas, small towns, university towns, etc. At present, Aldi chain stores are scattered all over Germany, with an average of one Aldi branch for every 25,000 people. Its products are aimed at the general public, with high quality and low prices, and have a relatively stable consumer group.
Aldi's physical stores only sell 600-800 kinds of goods, but they can meet the daily grocery needs of consumers. Its simplified business model has reduced the difficulty of purchasing, storing, selling and managing goods to a certain extent, and also reduced the company's operating and management costs for subsequent online sales.
It is reported that Aldi in the south is gradually using a network information system in the entire store network. The new system includes e-commerce , online food procurement and other related functions. It is expected that the investment will involve about 1.5 billion euros.
Aldi has also launched a "customer loyalty" app to compete with grocery discount store Lidl Plus. It can be seen that Aldi is confident and well prepared for its online business. It is indeed exciting to see how the new operating model works.
Some analysts pointed out that the development of online food sales platforms will bring Aldi greater national influence. Based on the brand's stable consumer group, the launch of the online sales model will inject new vitality into the brand and open up new paths for the development of daily necessities such as groceries in the post-epidemic era.
