150 million people shop online for the first time, global e-commerce ushers in new development

As offline retail stores were forced to close and reduce staff and the number of people entering stores, e-commerce reached an all-time high in 2020, accounting for 16.4% of global retail sales at one point. This means that in just a few weeks, we saw the accelerated development of e-commerce in the past decade.

150 million people shop online for the first time

Data shows that it’s not just younger shoppers (millennials and members of Generation Z), but older shoppers are already shopping online, which has greatly driven the global trend of e-commerce.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, a survey of shoppers in 11 markets around the world showed that 84% of people shopped online , of which 150 million were first-time online shoppers.

Even now, 65% of respondents say they shop in physical stores, while 38% say they shop less frequently now than they did last year. Looking ahead to the next six months, 57% say they will shop in physical stores regularly, while 79 % say they will shop online regularly.

Improve consumers’ online shopping experience

For retailers, optimizing omni-channels such as online marketplaces, social media, retail and wholesale is an important step in the continued prosperity of their e-commerce. In addition, consumers' online shopping experience also needs to be taken seriously.

Data shows that global e-commerce sales mainly occur on mobile devices, accounting for 50% . However, consumers have very low tolerance for mobile shopping. According to Google's research, if the website takes more than three seconds to load, more than half of consumers will leave the website.

To minimize bounce rates, stores can use adapted website devices to help improve site speed , user experience, and SEO , especially when combined with progressive web apps and accelerated mobile pages.

It is reported that progressive web applications combine the advantages of web and mobile applications, allowing users to have a website that feels and behaves like an application. Even if the user is offline, the site can load instantly and can reside on the user's home screen.

Sellers need to note that consumers are now generating a large amount of data through online shopping , browsing, etc. Technology is also a particularly critical point, which is related to consumers' online shopping experience and is crucial for sellers.
