Development History

-Instacart was founded by Apoorva Mehta, Max Mullen, and Brandon Leonardo in 2012 and launched in the San Francisco Bay Area to help local grocery stores deliver food.

-In 2013, the Express membership program was introduced, providing customers with unlimited free deliveries for a low monthly subscription fee.

In 2014, Instacart expanded to 10 additional major metropolitan areas, including launches in New York City, Los Angeles, and Portland.

-In 2017, Instacart went national by partnering with major U.S. grocery retailers and expanding into Canada. In the same year, Instacart advertising was launched.

In 2018, Instacart acquired Unata, a Toronto-based technology platform that powers grocery e-commerce sites, and launched its first enterprise product for retailers, including grocers.

In 2020, Instacart expanded to serve new verticals, including beauty, electronics, and pets, while growing the Instacart shopper community to more than 500,000 people in the U.S. and Canada.

-In 2021, Instacart expanded EBT SNAP payment integration nationwide, then acquired FoodStorm and Caper AI to bolster the retailer’s technology offerings — while welcoming new CEO Fidji Simo.

-In 2022, Instacart launched the Instacart Platform, a complete set of end-to-end solutions that enable retailers to grow their businesses.
