What is Bank Holiday? Bank Holiday Review, Features

The UK's national holidays are different from China's. China generally has traditional festivals (such as Qingming Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, New Year, etc.) or major national holidays (such as Labor Day, National Day, etc.), while the UK's are uniformly called Bank Holidays. Except for a few major holidays that can be named, such as New Year, Easter, and Christmas, all others are called Bank Holidays. What's even more unique is that the UK's public holidays are not unified. In addition to a few major traditional holidays, England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland each have their own different Bank Holidays.

About Bank Holidays

Compared to other European countries, the UK has relatively few public holidays. Usually, these public holidays are also called "bank holidays" because banks will be closed and all transactions will be suspended during the holidays. There are two bank holidays in the UK, namely the Spring Bank Holiday on the last Monday of May and the Summer Bank Holiday on the last Monday of August.

origin

The origin of the Bank Holiday in the UK can be traced back to 1834, when it originally referred to the bank's rest time. In 1871, banker Sir John Lubbock formally proposed to set Bank Holiday as a statutory holiday, which means a national rest day.

The so-called Bank Holiday, as the name suggests, is a day when banks are closed. In fact, banks are not allowed to operate on these days, resulting in the inability to operate in some other industries. Therefore, many British shops will also be closed on this day. However, most shops will continue to operate even on bank holidays. They are named Bank Holidays because on these days, banks are closed and there is no business activity. If a Bank Holiday happens to fall on a weekend, then choose a day in another week (usually the following week) to make up for it as a Bank Holiday.

On Bank Holidays in the UK, everyone has a day off except for special industries (such as water and electricity, firefighting, ambulance, police, health care workers, etc., but they will get double pay on these days). Almost everyone in the UK likes this Bank Holiday very much, because it is a statutory holiday and does not count as leave.
