Recently, the Supply Chain Innovation Center of Stanford University Graduate School of Business released the "White Paper on Cross-border E-commerce Logistics Strategies" ( hereinafter referred to as the "White Paper"), which provides a detailed cross-border logistics guide for Chinese and overseas cross-border e-commerce practitioners, focusing on the comparison of cross-border e-commerce logistics models, process analysis and cross-border logistics development trends.
The logistics service provider section of the white paper details different types of logistics service providers, including postal services, commercial express delivery, freight forwarding companies, and e-commerce logistics. Among them, Cainiao and Amazon, as representatives of cross-border e-commerce logistics service providers, are included in the white paper case studies. Cainiao's full-link B2C and B2B2C import logistics models, including bonded, direct mail, and duty-free, are presented in detail.
The white paper believes that for "cross-border newcomers", entrusting logistics to e-commerce logistics companies is the best choice. On the one hand, e-commerce logistics can achieve efficient order fulfillment and higher customer satisfaction, which is conducive to merchants expanding their business scale; on the other hand, the end-to-end full-link logistics provided by e-commerce logistics can allow merchants to focus more on product development and operation itself, eliminating worries.
Hau L. Lee, Thoma Professor of Management and Information Technology at Stanford University's Graduate School of Business, said: "Cross-border e-commerce has become an important part of the entire e-commerce industry, but complex cross-border logistics is a major challenge. Recently, we have found that logistics companies have made significant progress in process design, infrastructure construction and digital technology through innovation, and Cainiao is ahead in these areas."
At present, Cainiao has established eHubs (digital logistics hubs) in core cities such as Hong Kong, Liege, and Kuala Lumpur, operates 3 million square meters of cross-border warehouses worldwide, 245 charter flights per month, and 15 automatic distribution centers around the world. Relying on the international end-to-end logistics network operation and combination capabilities such as international hubs, trunk lines, terminals, and customs, it has become a trend for Chinese products to go overseas and for overseas brands to come to China to find Cainiao.
The white paper mentioned that Cainiao, which has grown based on Alibaba's e-commerce business, provides global merchants with end-to-end logistics solutions for importing and exporting to China, covering inland transportation from overseas ports to warehouses, head leg, overseas warehousing and order fulfillment, as well as inland transportation and terminal delivery in China.
In addition, the white paper also predicts that cross-border, digital and low-carbon will be the three major trends in the future innovation and development of logistics companies. Against the backdrop of the booming global cross-border e-commerce market, many companies engaged in cross-border transportation and order fulfillment will expand their service scope and global influence.
For example, freight forwarding companies not only coordinate port-to-port sea or air transport for customers, they can also arrange inland transportation in and out of the port, customs declaration document preparation, warehousing and order fulfillment services, etc. Similarly, some large e-commerce logistics companies are also constantly expanding their service boundaries, from serving domestic merchants in the early days to focusing on serving cross-border sellers. For example, Cainiao currently provides end-to-end cross-border logistics solutions between China and more than 100 countries and regions around the world, including operation centers that transport goods from China to overseas markets such as Europe and the United States.
In terms of how to choose a suitable cross-border logistics service provider, the white paper recommends that merchants should analyze and compare multiple factors, including the professional level of the logistics service provider and its familiarity with the target market, expected sales and demand patterns, and the characteristics of the products they sell, and conduct a comprehensive assessment.
It is reported that since the construction of the "International Logistics Corridor" was launched in 2018, Cainiao has built a high-quality global logistics network, handling more than 4.5 million cross-border parcels per day, making it one of the world's top four cross-border logistics companies.
