More than half of Europeans pay a lot of attention to shipping costs when shopping online

According to foreign media reports, in order to investigate what Europeans expect from e-commerce merchants, online market research company YouGov surveyed 8,602 online shoppers from Germany, France, Britain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Austria and Switzerland. The survey showed that in most parts of Europe, delivery costs have become the primary factor affecting whether online shoppers place an order.

The data shows that 55% of the respondents believe that they attach great importance to shipping costs when shopping online, but this does not mean that they are willing to pay for shipping. If the product is worth investing in, they are still willing to pay for it. In addition, even 26% of people think that all orders should be free shipping.

Free delivery is particularly important to the French and Spanish, with 39% of Spaniards and 32% of French people stating that they will only order from stores that offer free shipping, compared to just 17% of British people in the UK , with a further 52% saying they are willing to pay for shipping on products that are worth it.

In addition, most British people do not mind paying shipping costs for niche products, while only 21 % of Dutch people are willing to pay for shipping costs for niche products, which ranks last among all European countries surveyed.

The survey pointed out that for many European consumers, order value is the first consideration that determines whether they are willing to pay shipping costs. 34% of Dutch people hope that merchants can provide free shipping for orders over 20 euros. Under the same conditions, only 6% of Italians are willing to pay for it.

Regarding the issue of free shipping, there are three different attitudes overall: uniform free shipping (over 25%), depending on the order value (30%), and depending on the product and its availability ( about 33%).

In addition, YouGov also investigated the preferred payment methods in different European countries . Statistics show that 51% of Italians like to use third-party payment platforms when shopping online. Germany ( 46%) and the United Kingdom (42%) also like this payment method . It is worth noting that only 12% of Swiss people will choose third-party payment platforms.

Additionally, credit cards are most popular in France ( 58%), Spain (47%) and the UK (41%) , while invoice payment is more common in the DACH region .

Regarding delivery methods, the survey shows that people in southern Europe prefer cash on delivery ; the British ( 90% ) prefer door-to-door delivery ; and the Dutch prefer to fill in a specific delivery date or time when placing an order .
