Last month, 350 workers at Amazon's Coventry warehouse made history by completing the first strike action by Amazon workers in the UK, but this is clearly just the beginning.
Currently, the British GMB union's demand is still to increase the basic salary of warehouse workers from 10.5 pounds per hour to 15 pounds per hour. Amazon responded with the same old rhetoric, saying that it had increased employees' salaries and provided many other benefits in the past few years, and that it had done everything it should do.
And because Amazon does not recognize the UK union, it has not chosen to conduct public salary negotiations with union representatives.
In response to this situation, the British GMB trade union announced that workers will continue to strike in the future, and the frequency and duration will increase.
The GMB union said that according to the current plan, workers will strike on February 28 and March 2, and from March 13 to March 17. Judging from the time span, it can be seen that the union is determined to fight Amazon to the end this time.
There are currently about 1,500 workers in the Coventry warehouse, who are mainly responsible for scanning various goods and then sending them to the final stop, the distribution center, which will finally deliver them to consumers.
In addition to the strike at the Coventry warehouse, the GMB union has recently begun contacting about 200 employees working at the Amazon center in Tilbury, Essex, and is discussing whether to support them in strike activities.
In addition, the union also ridiculed Amazon's previous 5% salary increase, calling it "a way to get rid of beggars." And the workers also cried to local media about their experiences working at Amazon, including strict performance appraisals and anti-human behavior such as toilet timekeeping. But what’s interesting is that while Amazon workers in the UK are clamoring to go on strike, Americans on the other side of the Atlantic are clamoring to work in the factory.
It is understood that Amazon has built a new warehouse in Humboldt Park, but construction has been delayed. Anxious local people call Amazon every day to urge it to start construction.
Some even organized themselves to take to the streets to protest, urging Amazon to put the newly built warehouse into use as soon as possible. It can be seen that some Americans are indeed having a hard time now, and they are fighting hard to get to work.
Amazon said that these new facilities are still under construction and are scheduled to be officially put into use later this year. Everyone is welcome to apply at that time. Amazon strike |
