The product recall rate in the United States hit a ten-year high! Five major categories became the "hardest hit areas"

Recently, Sedgwick Brand Protection Company released the latest US Product Recall Index report .

Data shows that in the first quarter of 2022, more than 900 million products were recalled in the US market , setting a record high in ten years.

U.S. regulators will step up enforcement activities starting in 2022 and conduct stricter scrutiny of the automotive, consumer products, food and beverage, pharmaceutical and medical device categories .

According to statistics, there were 221 car recalls in the first quarter of 2022 , which was lower than the quarterly average in 2021. However, the number of recalled cars reached 9.3 million , an increase of 114.2% compared with the same period last year.

The number of consumer product recalls surged 63.8% in the first quarter of 2022, reaching its highest level in nearly five years , and the number of recalls increased 161.0%.

While the number of food recalls initiated by the FDA decreased by 12.7%, the average number of recalls soared 328.4% to more than 1.3 million.

It is worth noting that the number of medical device product recalls soared in the first quarter, up 2,624.9% year-on-year , with an average recall of more than 1.5 million units - a recall of the same scale has only occurred once in the past 15 years .

As with medical devices, the number of drug recalls has reached its highest level in nearly 15 years, with an average of more than 4.6 million products recalled each time . Data shows that the total number of drugs recalled in the first quarter of 2022 exceeded 435 million , also setting a 15-year high .

New changes in the five key regulatory categories in 2022

For automakers, it is imperative to improve vehicle safety , because the United States will introduce new regulations on self-driving cars and electric vehicles this year , which will impose stricter restrictions on industry products . Although the new regulations may bring burdens to manufacturers, strong legal protection will increase consumer confidence in automotive products .

In the consumer goods category , children’s products will be the focus of regulators and legislators, with new legislation focusing on banning the sale of crib bumpers , while sustainability -related products are another focus.

In the food and beverage category, this year’s focus will be on infant formula as the FDA continues to address national food shortages and review complaints and recall programs related to infant formula and specialty medical foods.

In the pharmaceutical category , lawmakers and regulators will be focused on lowering drug prices this year . Lawmakers in both houses of Congress recently introduced legislation aimed at addressing anticompetitive behavior in the industry by increasing innovation and lowering drug prices .

For medical device products, the FDA's main regulatory focus this year is to coordinate its quality system regulations and align U.S. medical device manufacturing standards with those of other countries.

In recent months, recall incidents have occurred frequently in the US market, involving many categories , causing panic among sellers.

Because U.S. regulatory agencies are increasingly strict in their review of daily necessities, once safety hazards are discovered, they will be immediately recalled and removed from the shelves, and in serious cases , legal liability will be pursued.

Therefore, sellers must strictly control the quality and safety of store merchandise to avoid recalls due to product safety issues and unnecessary losses.
