Attention sellers! Grasp the new trend of summer consumption in the United States

According to eBay’s search rankings, fashion videos on social media have a significant impact on the shopping trends of young consumers. Not only that, people of other age groups are also influenced by nostalgic videos, which in turn changes their consumption behavior.

Recently, Jordan Sweetnam, Vice President of eBay, released the summer hot selling trends of eBay US based on consumer shopping behavior. Among them, four categories of products, including retro products, movie peripherals, eBay exclusive rare electronic goods and travel products, are very popular among American consumers.

Revisiting the 90s, retro style is coming

As popular videos on social media platforms change, searches for Y2K (short for "year 2000") items on eBay have increased by 640%, and retro-style items are popular among Generation Z consumers in the United States.

Suddenly, Gen Z consumers were snapping up late ’90s-inspired items like metallic jackets, preppy prints, scrunchies, Prada sunglasses, velour tracksuits and vintage trucker hats.

In addition, influenced by 90s rock bands, Generation Z consumers’ searches for flannel shirts, band T-shirts, ripped jeans and Doc Martens soared. Casual retro brands such as Converse and Chuck Taylor All-Stars increased significantly on eBay’s search list, and searches for Converse x A-Cold-Wall Aeon Active CX increased by 292% month-on-month.

The rise of vintage style has given new life to these clothes, accessories and souvenirs.  

Influenced by the movie box office, movie peripherals are very popular

If TikTok videos have led to the rise of retro products, then Hollywood remakes have increased searches and sales of movie-related products.

With a steady stream of Hollywood releases this May, such as Top Gun Maverick, interest in Ray-Ban Aviator sunglasses, bomber jackets and jumpsuits will continue to soar.

Likewise, as the first season of Werewolf by Night became a hit, their fans began searching for related comics in large numbers, with searches for werewolf comics and action figures increasing by 142% and 126% respectively.

Not long ago, with the release of Marvel movies such as Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, a large number of Marvel collectibles began to be frequently searched.

Rare items sold exclusively on eBay

eBay is not only a place to buy movie-related merchandise, but also some rare electronic products that can only be found on eBay.

Consumers who like rare and vintage gadgets may know that a Commodore 65 Prototype computer recently sold on eBay for nearly $50,000.

In terms of vintage collections, in addition to computers, all lines of film cameras are experiencing a recovery, with sales of Fuji GW690III increasing by 99% and sales of Leica M-A Rangefinder increasing by 43%.

Vintage and rare items became one of the hot selling themes on eBay in May, and the popularity has been renewed.

As outdoor activities increase in summer, travel products become more popular

In addition to vintage and rare items, eBay's market research found that in the summer, many American consumers choose to travel and engage in outdoor activities. All products suitable for travel and family vacation scenarios will be sought after, such as campaign equipment, travel bags, games, and electronic products suitable for travel.
