U.S. e-commerce sales to exceed $357 billion

U.S. e-commerce sales to exceed $357 billion

Recently, according to the latest data from eMarket , sales in the US e-commerce market are expected to reach US$357.26 billion in 2022 , accounting for 34.6% of the global market.

After the outbreak of the epidemic in 2020, the US e-commerce market developed rapidly, with sales increasing by 45%. In 2021, the growth rate of US e-commerce sales slowed down to 16.7%. This year, the growth rate of US e-commerce sales will continue the trend of last year, with an increase of only 14.8%.

Although the sales growth rate of the US e-commerce market has slowed down, as the world's second largest e-commerce market , the United States still has a lot of room for development.

Next, let’s take a closer look at the market performance of major e-commerce platforms in the United States.

Amazon's dominance in the US e-commerce market is unquestionable , with a market share of over 72%. It is expected that Amazon's online sales will reach more than $250 billion in 2022, an increase of 18.3% over last year. It is worth mentioning that Amazon's sales this year will reach 25% of the total US retail sales, and its status as a giant is unshakable.

eBay, which ranked second , performed mediocrely. eBay 's online sales have been declining since 2016 .

eBay 's online sales growth rate has slowed to 3% this year , and the platform's sales account for only 10.7 % of total US retail sales .

Etsy 's performance is very outstanding. Although it is not large in scale, Etsy is the only platform besides Amazon that has increased its market share . Etsy 's market share has increased by 2.6% this year. At the same time, its market sales are also growing synchronously, reaching US$9.2 billion, an increase of 17% over last year.

Although Walmart is the world 's largest retailer , the growth rate of Walmart 's e-commerce sales in the United States has suddenly slowed down in the past two years. After a breakthrough 100% growth in e-commerce sales in 2020, Walmart's e-commerce sales growth in 2021 was only 11.2%, and this year it dropped to 10.5%. This year, Walmart's e-commerce sales were only US$7.2 billion.

Overall, the US e-commerce market currently has a lot of room for growth. Especially in the current market environment, the US epidemic situation is severe, many factories have been forced to suspend production, transportation and supply chains have been severely affected, and dependence on import trade has increased. This is a very good opportunity for Chinese cross-border e-commerce sellers.
