The number of flights has doubled in half a year, and Amazon Air has expanded its European business

According to foreign media reports, Amazon Air has rapidly expanded its air cargo business in Europe in the past six months .

A new report from the Chaddick Institute for Urban Development shows that Amazon's air cargo division 's flights in Europe have expanded from an average of 18 flights per day in August 2021 to an average of 38 flights per day in March 2022 , an increase of more than 100%.

During the same period, Amazon Air's average daily flight number increased from 163.6 flights per day in August 2021 to 187 flights this month , an increase of 14.3%.

The report said that Amazon Air’s expansion in Europe was mainly due to its “partner flights” rather than Amazon Air ’s own aircraft. “ The number of Amazon Air’s own aircraft flights within Europe increased from 8.2 flights per day in August to 18.2 flights this month,” the report said. “Our analysis shows that the growth of partner flights is more significant, from less than 10 flights per day to approximately 20 to 24 flights per day.”

Amazon Air's busiest airports in Europe are Cologne-Bonn and Paris Charles de Gaulle, with an average of 5.8 flights per day.

“With Amazon Air expected to grow at the same pace as the second half of last year through the remainder of 2022 , this is an exciting time for Amazon Air, ” the report’s authors said .

They added: “Amazon Air’s fleet currently stands at 88 aircraft and could exceed 100 by the end of the year, not a slow pace of growth given slowing economic growth and rising jet fuel prices . ”

“We predicted about 20 months ago that Amazon Air would have 200 aircraft by 2028. In fact, given that Amazon Air is now acquiring turboprops and if ‘partner flights’ are included, a conservative estimate is that it may already have more than 110 aircraft in service.”

They also predict that as Amazon Air expands into intercontinental flights, it may acquire larger B777 freighters.
