New York City's new law requires warning labels on Christmas lights

The legislation defines seasonal and decorative lighting products and requires that each SADLP manufactured, sold, or distributed in New York State with a wire casing containing more than 100 parts per million of lead must have a warning label that reads, “WARNING: Handling the coated wire of this product may expose you to lead. Wash hands thoroughly after use. ” Any manufacturer that violates this provision will be fined $500.

Many decorative and seasonal holiday lights contain potentially unsafe levels of lead, and exposure to lead can cause serious health problems, including attacks on the brain and central nervous system, heart and kidney disease, reduced fertility and depression, and serious consequences for children.

Several independent studies conducted in compliance with CPSC standards have shown that some brands of children's products contain 30 times more lead than the regulatory agency allows .

While federal law prohibits the sale and manufacture of lead in house paint and gasoline, and New York has strict limits only on paint on children's toys and furniture and some glazed tableware, the sale of most other consumer products containing lead is not as strictly regulated.

The vast majority of holiday lights are manufactured overseas, and lead is also often applied to wire coverings to prevent plastic from cracking and act as a flame retardant. Because lead is not easily absorbed through the skin, the main concern about exposure stems from traces left on a person's hands after handling the lights.

“New Yorkers shouldn’t have to worry about exposing their children and loved ones to lead poisoning as we decorate our homes for the holidays, ” said Governor Hochul. “This legislation is a simple, common-sense way to protect New Yorkers as we participate in beloved holiday traditions, ensuring we have a safe, healthy, and happy holiday season.”

Lead poisoning is not a trivial matter, and sellers should also be cautious when making related products.
