PayPal updates its Seller Protection Program, requiring sellers to provide tracking numbers

Recently, PayPal in the United States has made policy updates. In a recent policy update, PayPal has modified its seller protection program - it will now require sellers to provide "verifiable online logistics tracking numbers ."

The changes to the Seller Protection Program are as follows:

Relocating PayPal's Purchase Protection Program and Seller Protection Program terms to separate web pages. These program terms are accepted when you agree to the User Agreement and remain a part of the User Agreement. The relocation is intended to make the terms easier to locate and navigate.

Revising PayPal’s Seller Protection Program to clarify that proof of shipment and proof of delivery must also include a tracking number that can be verified online.

Clarify that abuse of our Online Dispute Resolution process, PayPal's Purchase Protection Program and/or PayPal's Seller Protection Program are restricted activities as defined in the User Agreement.

Under the new Seller Protection Program, PayPal requires sellers to provide "valid proof of shipment or delivery , " but it is unclear whether this will ultimately affect how PayPal handles claims and the results .

In any case, sellers will face new difficulties : carriers can only retain online logistics tracking information for a limited time , while PayPal allows buyers to submit claims within six months of receipt .

For example, USPS only keeps tracking information for 4 months ( 2 years if the seller pays for signature payment ). Currently through USPS Premium Tracking service (now called USPS Tracking Plus), sellers now have the option to pay an additional $2.10 to keep online logistics tracking information for 6 months. But if you have to pay $2.10 for each order , this cost is still high for sellers .

Generally speaking, eBay sellers use PayPal more often. An eBay seller commented under a related post that since the shipping costs of packages with logistics tracking are higher, they usually choose logistics without logistics tracking function. If the extra cost is to be borne by the buyer, many buyers will be discouraged.

The new PayPal policy will take effect on December 10, 2021. It should be noted that the current policy is for PayPal users in the United States . It is not clear whether users in other regions and international versions will also have such regulations. However, sellers using PayPal can still pay attention to relevant information and make a plan B.
