Nearly 70% of British sellers have stopped selling on Amazon Germany!

Nearly two years have passed since the UK’s exit from the EU, and the impact of this event on trade between the UK and the EU continues to exist.

Recently, after studying British sellers on Amazon and eBay's European markets, British online stores reported that with a series of problems such as Brexit, the global epidemic and the supply chain crisis , nearly 70% of British sellers on Amazon Germany have now stopped selling.

As early as November 2019, there were more than 9,500 sellers from the UK operating on Amazon Germany, and more than half of them had sold more than 500 orders. However, by May 2021, 6,589 UK sellers had not made any sales in the past three months , and the number of sellers who stopped selling was nearly 70% .

This phenomenon is not surprising. Due to Brexit, trade between the UK and the EU is not as easy as before, and some online retailers in EU countries have stopped shipping to the UK . Those British sellers who continue to trade across borders in the EU face a series of problems such as compliance issues, shipping delays and additional costs .

According to statistics from British online stores, among the few British sellers who still sell on Amazon Germany , 17% mainly sell kitchen and home categories, 9% mainly sell toys, 9% sell sports and fitness categories , 8% sell medicines and personal care categories, 8% sell clothing categories , and 7% sell beauty categories .

Nearly 50% of these British sellers have an average product price of less than 20 euros, 36% have an average price of 20-50 euros, and only 16% have an average product price of more than 50 euros. Most of them use Amazon FBA to deliver orders to EU countries .

In addition to the logistical challenges of selling goods to Europe after Brexit , there are also regulatory challenges between countries . Some sellers said that they had incurred huge VAT bills when selling goods to the EU due to the volatility of trade with the EU .

Although it may seem a bit difficult for British sellers to sell in the EU market, the development prospects of e-commerce in the UK are very promising. Affected by the epidemic, more and more consumers are turning to online shopping. In 2019, e-commerce sales accounted for 22% of all retail sales . It is expected that by the end of 2021, this proportion will increase to more than 30% for the first time.

As to whether these suspended British e-commerce sellers will resume sales in the European market , it remains to be seen.
