Recently, according to foreign media reports, a TikTok user was shocked to find that her Amazon device stored thousands of files recording her voice. She then posted the incident in the form of a video, which has been viewed more than 2 million times since the end of August .
The user said she has three Amazon speakers at home, two Dots and an Echo. She has asked Amazon for all the data stored in her devices and received a compressed file with about 3,534 audio files containing her voice , including folders containing short audio recorded by the speakers .
The woman said she even found a folder with her phone contacts , but she said she had no memory of syncing with her Amazon account. She was also bothered by the fact that the device could locate the user's details and record them.
In response to such incidents, Amazon said that they are transparent about the data collection of the Alexa application and treat the data collected by Alexa equally. Customers are able to control the collected data and can choose to review and delete their recordings at any time, or choose not to save them at all.
Amazon said that “customers can import their phone contacts into the Alexa app so they can use features like hands-free calling and messaging . This optional feature is something customers need to set up and can be disabled at any time. ”
While Amazon claims they are transparent about their data collection practices, this isn’t the first time the company has come under fire for what users consider to be privacy violations, particularly with regard to audio recordings .
Back in 2018, an Oregon woman discovered that her Amazon device was recording conversations in her home and emailing them to a contact in Seattle. “I felt violated , like a complete invasion of privacy, ” she told Seattle TV station KIRO 7.
The woman , who said she has Amazon speakers installed in every room of her home, called Amazon after receiving a message from a friend that her device was sending data, and an engineer told her that this did happen with her device but that it was "very rare."
Amazon sent KIRO 7 a statement saying, "Amazon takes privacy very seriously. We investigated what happened and determined that this was an extremely rare incident. We are taking steps to avoid this from happening in the future. "
