While e-commerce makes our daily shopping more convenient, the layers of packaging also cause a lot of waste and pollution, which is contrary to the concept of sustainable development advocated today.
Recently, a foreign non-profit organization Habits of Waste launched a ShipNaked campaign, calling on everyone to send emails to well-known e-commerce platforms such as Amazon, Walmart and Target to reduce excessive packaging in online orders.
According to statistics, about 850 million tons of paper and cardboard are discarded every year , which is equivalent to about 1 billion trees. Amazon alone delivers 1.7 million packages every day. After the delivery is completed, most of these boxes and bags will be thrown into landfills, leaving about 465 million pounds of plastic packaging waste.
With e-retail sales expected to reach $4.8 trillion by the end of this year , packaging waste will continue to increase and the pollution it causes will become even more serious.
The group is proposing that for products that already have their own packaging, there won’t be any need for additional boxes or plastic packaging. “By making this simple change, we will immediately reduce millions of pounds of plastic waste and cardboard waste.”
To make it easier, the organizers have also created a handy one-click email to email e-commerce companies that waste resources. Another way is to use social media, such as posting pictures of packages with excessive packaging on Instagram and adding the hashtag #ShipNaked.
The campaign hopes that e-commerce giants such as Amazon and Walmart will make changes and assume this social responsibility.
In addition, food packaging is also one of the main sources of pollution, accounting for almost half of all marine plastic waste. Foreign countries are also vigorously promoting the reduction of disposable plastic products and advocating consumers to use reusable containers, cups and bags to buy groceries. For example, the recent plastic restriction order in Europe shows this trend.
Sustainable development is a value concept that each of us needs to implement. Sellers can also try to reduce excessive packaging while ensuring that the products are intact. Some time ago, the country also advocated that milk tea straws be changed to paper ones, but there is still a long way to go. Each of us should try to reduce unnecessary waste in our daily lives.
