COSCO SHIPPING launches fast route from China to the United States

It is reported that COSCO Shipping will provide shippers with fast multimodal transport services to help shippers quickly transport goods from China to Chicago, the United States.

Shippers now have the option of shipping goods in containers from Shanghai, Ningbo and Qingdao to the Port of Prince Rupert in British Columbia, Canada , from where they can be transported by rail to Chicago. COSCO Shipping said its multimodal solution can deliver goods to their destination in as fast as 19 days .

Although the sailing time between the US and China is only 14 days, the US West Coast is experiencing severe congestion, and ships currently need to wait for berths in the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach for about 9 days . Combined with the time required for unloading and the bottleneck of US rail transportation, it may take a month or even longer for the goods to actually reach Chicago . It is speculated that the congestion in Los Angeles and Long Beach will continue until the end of the year.

“The service will greatly solve the difficulties faced by direct customers, ensure the security and stability of the supply chain, and thus ease the imbalance of market supply and demand in the global economy , ” COSCO Shipping said in a press release. The route will use five 4,250 teu ships, “which will effectively ease the import and export market pressure between China and the United States, especially in Long Beach and Los Angeles.”

At Prince Rupert, COSCO ’s vessels will call at DP World ’s terminal , from where cargo will be delivered to the connecting Canadian National Railway line. COSCO will also offer services to customers of its Ocean Alliance partners CMA CGM and Evergreen , with plans to expand coverage to more inland points in the United States and eastern Canada .

British Columbia, located at the end of the shortest distance between North America and Asia , is known as Canada's Pacific Gateway. As early as 2007, it used Prince Rupert as another way to enter Chicago, Detroit and Tennessee . Statistics from the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs show that the logistics of Vancouver and Prince Rupert have accounted for nearly 10% of the entire west coast of Canada , of which re-exports to the United States account for about 9%.
