Bicycles in short supply in Russia, prices will continue to rise

The Russian bicycle market is experiencing a year of strong demand.

According to foreign media reports, by the end of September 2021, the sales of bicycles on Russian e-commerce giant Ozon had increased nearly three times compared with the same period in 2020. The most popular among Russian consumers are city and mountain bikes. In the St. Petersburg region of Russia , consumers spend an average of about 16,000 rubles on bicycles .  

At the same time, the Russian bicycle market has also seen a shortage of products during the peak season . It is revealed that the shortage of bicycle supply is caused by delivery difficulties caused by the global logistics crisis and production difficulties caused by the energy crisis in various countries . All of these factors may lead to supply disruptions and product price increases next year.

Russian bicycle company Electra said that compared with last year's record, the demand in the bicycle market has dropped slightly, but it still remains at a very high level. At present, due to the shortage of supply, many consumers need to make reservations in advance to buy bicycles, sometimes waiting for a month or even longer.

In addition, due to the shortage of supply, the price of bicycles in Russia is also rising. It is reported that the average price increase of bicycles in the Russian market is about 20%. The main reason for the price increase is the increase in the cost of metals , especially steel and aluminum , as well as some other components. In addition, the increase in logistics service costs is also an important reason for the increase in bicycle prices.

Kirill Ostapenko, founder of the VeloDrive franchise network , said that due to this series of reasons, the price of bicycles in various market segments will increase by an average of 20-30%, and some will even increase by 50%. Despite this , not all consumers can afford or buy the model of bicycle they like.

Bicycle manufacturers are unable to reach their optimal production capacity, which is a very serious problem. Relevant industry professionals said that it used to take about 3-4 months to complete the delivery of an order , but now it may take 15-20 months. Currently, Russian bicycle retailers are being forced to replan, and some merchants have begun to pre-order goods by the end of 2023.
