Canadian holiday shopping survey released, clothing is the most popular category

Unlike last year, the epidemic this year has eased, and people are resuming pre-epidemic holiday traditions, including gatherings, giving gifts to each other, etc., so consumers may spend more this year.

After surveying 2,500 consumers, the RCC expects the average Canadian to spend $792 on the holidays this year, compared with $693 last year. The commission said that based on past experience, consumers actually spend much more than they plan, so the actual spending this year may be more than $800.

This year Canadians will spend the majority of their budget on clothing, followed by food, toys and personal electronics, compared to food which accounted for the largest share last year.

In fact, in a recently released survey of American teenagers’ consumption, clothing also surpassed food to become the top spending category. In 2020, the epidemic hit the global clothing industry hard. However, this year the clothing industry seems to have recovered. According to the survey agency NPD, this is because most consumers need to buy new clothes this year. The main reasons for purchase include the original clothes being worn out, the size change, and the increase in the number of outings.

As for the timing of shopping, RCC said that due to the shortage of goods and long shipping time, more Canadians will shop in advance this year. 30% of Canadians plan to start shopping before November, compared with 23% in 2020. However, November will still be the busiest shopping month, with 36% of consumers planning to start their holiday shopping in November. Among those who plan to shop in November, 43% will shop on Black Friday, 35% will shop on Cyber Monday, and 34% plan to shop on Boxing Day.

In addition to these, Canadians said holiday discounts and free shipping are important factors in their purchase considerations.

Although Canada is not as big as the European and American markets, it is also an economic powerhouse and has a high acceptance of cross-border shopping. Many Chinese products are very popular in Canada, so sellers may wish to pay attention to them.
