Shopee cancels the package with the buyer's phone information and is committed to protecting the buyer's privacy

Recently, according to foreign media reports, in order to protect customer privacy, the phone number of goods on the Shopee platform will no longer be displayed during delivery.

Starting October 21, e-commerce platform Shopee announced that it will remove buyers’ phone numbers from J&T Express and Ninja Van air waybills to ensure customer security and privacy. According to Shopee’s air waybill update, buyers’ phone numbers were removed from other express companies on September 13, 2021.

But it is worth noting that this system only applies to J&T Express and Ninja Van air waybills. The buyer’s phone number will still be printed on Poslaju and City-Link Express air waybills.

In addition, when the postman needs to communicate with the buyer by phone about the delivery status of the goods package, Shopee said that the courier can retrieve the buyer's phone number through the system and contact the buyer when necessary.

Although Shopee’s update may seem like a minor change to some buyers and sellers, criminals can conduct illegal activities with just a phone number.

It is reported that on December 14, 2020, a video showed that criminals managed to obtain a buyer 's private information from a discarded express package . The criminals then used the buyer's phone number to commit fraud, causing the buyer to lose a lot of property. Some criminals even used stolen information to pretend to be Amazon deliverymen and appeared at the customer's home, asking the buyer to pay for the fake cash on delivery.

Later, according to the police, although the authorities have not received any reports of such incidents, such cases will be investigated according to the law under Section 420 of the Penal Code . Once convicted, the fraudsters may face up to ten years in prison or caning.

With the advent of the digital age and the continuous development of Internet technology, people's awareness of protecting privacy information has been continuously improved. In the face of endless fraudulent means, Shopee's policy of canceling the display of phone numbers on packages has had obvious effects.
