Biden officially announced: The Port of Los Angeles will be open 24 hours a day to alleviate the cargo backlog problem!

U.S. President Joe Biden on Wednesday urged the private sector to help ease supply chain congestion that threatens to disrupt the U.S. holiday season and said the White House plans to overhaul the clogged system across the country.

Biden said that the Port of Los Angeles will work with the Port of Long Beach to expand 24-hour operations to unload the approximately 500,000 containers waiting on offshore cargo ships as quickly as possible .

At the same time, Walmart , Target and other large retailers will also expand their nighttime operations at ports to try to meet logistics needs.

Biden said this is an important step in improving the supply chain problems in the U.S. consumer market , and the government will increase its participation and support. The longer-term goal of this move is to solve long-standing problems in the U.S. supply chain .

The global supply chain crisis is largely caused by the global epidemic. Amid worker shortages and reduced transportation capacity , sales of daily necessities have surged , and the cycle of the two has caused the problem to become increasingly serious.

In addition to stepping up port activities, three major cargo carriers , Walmart , UPS and FedEx , as well as Samsung , Home Depot and Target , will also strengthen 24-hour operations and increase work arrangements during non-peak hours .

Walmart will increase evening hours and plans to increase throughput by 50% in the coming weeks .

UPS will increase data sharing with ports, which will allow it to ship 20% more containers from ports.

FedEx is combining nighttime operations with truck and rail transport to increase the number of containers shipped from ports .

Samsung will move nearly 60% of the containers out of these ports through the upcoming round-the-clock operations.

Home Depot has pledged to increase weekly container traffic by 10% during newly available off-peak port hours at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach .

Target currently ships about 50% of its containers overnight, a number it expects to increase by 10% over the next 90 days.

It is estimated that once these measures are in place , more than 3,500 additional containers will be transported and processed at night every week by the end of this year, and port congestion and supply chain problems will be alleviated to a certain extent.
