French e-commerce sales reached 112.2 billion euros in 2020

Like the rest of Europe, French e-commerce was marked by the pandemic in 2020. Recently, the French National Association of European E-Commerce presented key data on French e-commerce in 2020 in a report .

Internet sales in France increased by 8.5% compared to 2019. Growth was not homogeneous for all products, as sales of services were hit hard by the pandemic. Internet sales grew by an average of 13% per year compared to the previous four years . This growth was mainly due to a sharp increase in sales of goods (32%), while online sales of services fell by 10% , with a sharp drop in sales of travel, transport and leisure accounting for 41% of this .

E-commerce accounts for 13.1% of all retail trade in France .

While e-commerce generated €112.2 billion, sales of online goods amounted to €60.6 billion. This represents an increase of 3.3% compared to 2019, which typically averages 0.7% per year . The non-food sector was able to maintain some activity during the lockdown thanks to internet sales.

And according to the study , 41.6 million French people shopped online in 2020 , accounting for 81.4% of all internet users in the country. This is an increase of 1.5 million compared to 2019, and 41.4% of buyers shopped via mobile phones.

E-commerce platforms have expanded the categories available to consumers, and when French consumers cannot buy all categories in stores, they can find them online. This has led to an average transaction value of €61, an increase of 2.6% over the average transaction value in 2019. This is the first increase after eight consecutive years of decline.

Many retailers increased their online channels in 2020 to provide consumers with the possibility to continue purchasing. After the blockade was lifted, consumers' online habits continued, and now they are more supportive of retailers' omnichannel sales , adopting a combination of online and offline models.

In France, 52% of sellers selling online are growing, compared to 39% of sellers operating only offline .

As an important market in Europe, France's momentum cannot be underestimated, and sellers in the European market should also pay more attention to local developments.
